Memorial Day has a way of sneaking up on us — one minute we’re complaining about pollen and unpredictable weather, and the next we’re standing at the edge of summer, toes in the sand, iced drink in hand, wondering how we survived the last few months without sunshine therapy.

But before the beach bags, before the cookouts, before the first “is the water warm yet?” toe dip, Memorial Day asks us to pause. To remember. To honor.
